COURSE OVERVIEW

Led by experienced expedition medical doctors, our courses deliver medical planning and practical skills for those who may need to give prolonged care in the field. Geared towards those exploring remote landscapes where immediate medical care is not always accessible, our syllabus differs from typical 'First Responder' courses with a UK focus. Prior first aid certification is required before enrolling.

Our faculty, coauthors of the Faculty of Prehospital Care Updated Guidance on Medical Provision for Wilderness Medicine and The Oxford Handbook of Wilderness and Expedition Medicine, will guide you through expedition medical planning, legal considerations, ethical dilemmas, and mental health preparedness.

Engage in practical simulations to build confidence and structure for medical or trauma emergencies.

The Remote Medical Responder course will adequately prepare you for emergency situations whilst spending time to emphasise the more common yet important conditions that occur on expedition.

Learn decision-making and effective communication for timely evacuations. Gain proficiency in using Prescription-only Medications (POMs) with the added benefit of prescription rights for overseas use for two years post-course completion.

Elevate your skills with our Level 2 course, focusing on advanced techniques like intramuscular injections, wound stapling, and subcutaneous fluids. Navigate through scenarios involving multiple casualties, advanced trauma management, and complex evacuations. Explore advanced pain management, including controlled drugs, and create a personalised medical kit for specific expeditions.

Choose a comprehensive experience by enrolling in both Level 1 and Level 2 courses as a single 4-day adventure or explore each level individually with our 2-day courses. Uncover the adventurer within and let the wilderness become your classroom.

COURSE ITINERARY LEVEL 2

This course encompasses Level 1 and Level 2 of the Remote Medical Responder Course and is aimed at those working in remote or extreme environment where access to timely medical care is not available.

The curriculum is designed and delivered by senior expedition medical doctors with decades of experience, and who co-authored the Faculty of Prehospital Care Updated Guidance on Medical Provision for Wilderness Medicine and The Oxford Handbook of Wilderness and Expedition Medicine.

The remote medical responder course is internationally recognised and we have taught diverse groups from expedition leaders at the Royal Geographical Society, BBC and National Geographic film crew and explorers, and African Parks rangers.

Enhancing the knowledge and skills gained from the first two days course (Level 1), the second two days will deliver training in advanced techniques for overseas use: IM injections, wound stapling and closure and subcutaneous fluids. We work through scenarios in multiple casualty triage and advanced trauma management, communication with pre hospital services and how to practically manage complex evacuations. You will learn theory and techniques in advanced pain management including the use of controlled drugs and how to put together a bespoke medical kit for specific expeditions.
